The best part of The Coaching Habit? Turns out it’s other people.

A note from MBS

If you listened, you got something the readers didn’t. This edition has real conversations folded in: me coaching and talking with people like Brené Brown, Will Guidara, Oliver Burkeman, and Liz Wiseman. You get to hear the questions do their work in real time, on real people, pauses and surprises and all.

That’s the thing about a good question. On the page it’s a sentence. Out loud, in a real moment, you can hear how it changes what happens between people. So gather a few of your people who listened too, and compare what you caught. Odds are the best bit for you was a moment someone else listened straight past.

What this looks like

1

Find your people

A couple of others who like listening to books too.

2

Listen to the book

In the car, on a walk, while you cook. There’s no wrong setting.

3

Mark what sticks

A voice memo, a screenshot, a note on your phone. Whatever’s easy.

4

Compare what you each caught

The questions below will get you going.

How you’ll run it

One Shot

Everyone reads the book first, then 60–90 minutes together on the questions.

Three Shots

Better for going deeper. Take the extra time together to pick one or two of the Seven Essential Questions and start practicing.

Questions worth staying with

On what listening does

Did hearing the book read aloud change how it landed for you?

On the Advice Monster

When did your Advice Monster show up this week, and did you catch it in the moment? What did you do when you saw it?

The Advice Monster is the part of you that jumps straight to advice.

On hearing the questions out loud

Which of the questions sounded easy to say when you heard it, and which one would feel awkward coming out of your mouth?

Just for fun

Of everyone Michael talks with on the audiobook, whose conversation would you most want to be in the middle of, and what would you want to be asked or to contribute?

To close — Question 7

What was most useful for you?
